Like a kick in the butt, the force of events wakes slumberous talents.

Most people do not use this Command because they think it is difficult, not because it is difficult. The command is actually quite easy, but because of the needed work prior to using this Command some are also intimidated. Basically, a Symbol is just a drawing saved a special way to make it easy to use over and over again.

I will not go into detail here on Drawing a Symbol. A symbol could be of anything, including a whole map (Symbols in Symbols is not a good thing, so you should Explode all the Symbols if you decide to do this!)

Once you are SURE that you have the Drawing of the Symbol the way you want use Change Layer to move all the Elements to the Symbol Definition Layer unless you are creating a special Symbol (Super Varicolored, City, Character Artist, etc...Those are Posts for the Command of the Week another time!). Now you are ready to Define the Symbol.

NOTE: Pay attention to the prompts in the Dialog at the bottom of the CC2 Screen.

Using the Symbol Definition Command you first name the Symbol, then you select the Origin of the Symbol (You can use Modifiers to select a specific point. Center, Endpoint, Midpoint, etc...), then you select the Elements that make up the Symbol, then OK Do It.

DO NOT PANIC! The Symbol was suppose to disappear. If you click on the Drawing Button of the Symbol Catalog (the one that looks like a Map next to the one that looks like a folder at the top of the Symbol Catalog Window) you will see your Symbol.

You can use Save as Catalog in Symbol Manager to save the Symbol as a Catalog or if you have more Symbols you can continue to Define the Symbols and add them all to the Catalog at one time. You should Save your work often as a Drawing or a Catalog while you are working on it, and I recommend that you do Save often when making Symbols. I draw a group and then define them all at one time when they are ready.
